OVLC initiates and supports conservation and stewardship activities.
Conservation Easement Stewardship
OVLC works with landowners who have chosen to create a conservation easement on their property to ensure that important conservation values are protected into the future. Baseline data showing the initial condition of the property is collected, and photos and annual reports document changes throughout time.
Wildlife Enhancement Projects
OVLC supports wildlife educational activities at Oroville Elementary School's 6th grade outdoor education camp. Students have built bat, falcon and bluebird boxes as part of their curriculum, working closely with Lee Root, a teacher and an OVLC board member.
Recent plantings along a wetlands east of Molson have enhanced habitat for Columbia sharp-tail grouse. OVLC partnered with students from the Tonasket Alternative School to install the plantings and fencing. Support for the project came through the Wildlife Habitat Improvement Program of the Natural Resource Conservation Service and the Landowner's Incentive Program of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.
Fish and Wildlife Oriented Recreation Projects
OVLC continues the legacy of the North Okanogan Sportsmen's Council and pays for the aeration of Sidley Lake in order to prevent fish winter-kill. The Sidley Lake Ice Fishing Festival has become an important event in the community in recent years.
